Lee Kong Chian contributed substantially to building schools in his hometown Meishan, as well as in Singapore, but he preferred to keep a low profile. Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan planned to name a school after him to honour him as a donor, but had to change it from Kong Chian to Kong Hwa upon his objection. A champion for civil rights, the leader of Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry enthusiastically pushed for a citizenship movement which helped many Chinese take root in Singapore. In 1952, he channeled his wealth to the Lee Foundation, providing unconditional support to individuals and groups in their education, as well as to other philanthropic work.
