In the past, Geylang Lorong 1 and 3 in the vicinity of Kallang River used to be a swamp, and was inhabited by the Chinese and Orang Laut. They prospered within kampong communities and lived in stilt houses. As decades went by, the entire landscape transformed as kampong houses made way for private terrace houses and HDB flats. The shipbuilding factories which used to line the river and supported the surrounding light industrial estate vanished in the 1970s. Conversely, Chwee Kang Beo, a Chinese temple which had lived through 60 years of history and changes, still stands proudly by the river. The Lee Rubber and Properties owned by Lee Kong Chian had also been an iconic feature at Geylang Lorong 3 for over half a century. A new wave of changes beckons after three years.
