Until 1961, customary marriages were recognised as valid. In this clip, Boon Hock Soon, former Assistant Registrar of Marriage, recalled how customary marriages were made redundant after 1961, which saw thousands trying to legalise their prior marriages at the Registry of Marriages (ROM). He also explained how they reacted quickly to handle the numerous appointments by turning Social Welfare Officers into temporary Commissioners for Oaths.
