Life as a New Recruit

By meWATCH Published: 28 May 2020 Audio: English

National Service (NS) was first instituted in 1967 to bolster Singapore’s military forces after its independence. All male Singaporean citizens and second-generation permanent residents are required to serve NS for a period of two years. In this clip, Chan Soo Sen, Former Minister of State at the Ministry of Trade & Industry, talked about how NS was by and large a culture shock as recruits are introduced to a completely new environment. They then learn to be independent away from home for the first time and develop a sense of discipline and responsibility.
