Taiwan's Presidential Race

By CNA Published: 09 Jan 2020 Audio: English

It was only in November last year when Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen's Democratic Progressive Party or DPP suffered a huge defeat in Taiwan's local elections. Tsai's political future appeared to be as good as over. Many observers have also written off her chances at winning the January's Presidential election. But one year on, the political pendulum seems to have swung in her favour. All of a sudden, she has gone from an underdog to a clear favourite. Latest opinion polls have indicated that Tsai is enjoying a comfortable lead over her two political rivals - Han Kuo-Yu from the Kuomintang (KMT) party and People First Party (PFP) Chairman, James Soong. What really led to her rising popularity in the eyes of the Taiwanese voters ? Will this political resurgence ensure her a certain victory in the January 11 Presidential election ?
