The scenario looks grim but sadly not enough is being done to address what's seen as a looming global crisis. In the most recent report released by the United Nations on climate change, global warming has caused damage to the earth at a pace no one had initially anticipated. In fact today, the tipping point has already been reached. The report observed that the past 5 years have been the warmest of any 5 year period on record. The amount of ice lost annually from the Antarctic ice sheet has also increased at least six-fold between 1979 and 2017 and the rate of sea-level rise has accelerated from 3.04 millimetres per year due to the higher global temperatures and melting of the mountain glaciers. As Asia races ahead to be the new industrial and economic powerhouse, will economic considerations become a major obstacle in their effort to fight climate change ? And what has been their response so far to stop the looming catastrophe ?
