On 6 Feb 1819, a cannon burst shook the bystanders as they waited to see the hubbub of activity on the Padang. Tengku Long, the soon-to-be Sultan, arrived in brightly coloured garments of silk and was accorded the full royal treatment. As he walked down the line of soldiers, there was a ceremonial presentation of arms. Tengku long then entered the tent, then in his presence, the Temenggong Abdul Rahman signed the treaty with Raffles and Farquhar. With that, the Union Jack was raised on the beach for the first time to an accompaniment of artillery volleys and salutes, as the party of four adjourns on board the Indiana for a banquet. The treaty allowed the British to set up a trading post in Singapore.
