Submitters: Tan Yi Hee, Patricia Teo Thiam Joo, Mohammad Zuhairee Bin Ramlan | Jalan to the West is a short 3-minutes satirical comedy animation which is inspired from the daily experiences commuters encounter whilst travelling from one end of the line to the next. The animation revolves around the hectic and crowded MRT journey that every individual has to face as they travel to work - with a humorous twist. The story revolves greatly around the Singapore environment, aiming to reach out to the locals being able to associate to the problems they face - parodying the usual "angry Aunties", "obnoxious Uncles" and some stereotypical humour. The title 'Jalan to the West' is also intended as a pun, where the team intended to refer to the famous Chinese folklore, parodying the journey of the monk as he travels to the West to receive scriptures from the Golden lands of the west. "Jalan" is a Malay word that refers to travelling, thus combining these two worlds which is able to translate a South-East Asian taste. As this film is targeted to be appreciated to everyone, one need not be a local to understand the animation as such a journey is relatable to any individual who have taken the public transport regardless of what nationality one might originate from. Reminding viewers that life may be frustrating at times, but it can be laughed at.
